Immanis @ The Ship Inn, Preston – Devils Night 2009

Immanis, taken from the Latin for ‘Monstrous’, took shape as the current four-piece in the summer of 2006 and have built up an impressive CV in the three short years since. Their debut album ‘War Machine’ in 2006 was followed by the long awaited second album ‘The Carnage Footprint’ in 2008 with much gigging stuffed into the gap. A blistering blend of orchestral and synthesized tones and the heaviest of drum fills create an atmosphere perfect for the mischief and mayhem which Devils Night demands, and a sound that you can feel pounding in your chest and penetrating your very soul.

After a hellish journey stuck in traffic on the M6 and a cancelled support band, you could have forgiven the boys from Edinburgh a less than perfect performance but no such leeway was necessary. Immanis took to the stage with an energy and presence seldom seen outside of a major arena tour. Some of the gathered masses know what to expect having seen live footage and heard the recordings before but even we are stunned by the power and effortless passion eschewing from these Scotsmen.

We were treated to a breathtaking onslaught of tracks from their first two albums including the awesomeness of ‘Waste not want not’ and ‘War Machine’. One of the best covers of the theme from the movie ‘Ghostbusters’ was blasted out to a gathered masses only too happy to join in before they continue the assault with more of their own. Before we knew it the set was over and we had witnessed the passing of an hour without even noticing.

What was the highlight of the night? For me it was watching five members of the gathered hordes playing a rather competitive game of musical chairs for the chance to win a CD or Band T-Shirt. Fortunately I had the chance to do it all again Halloween Night at The Sanctuary, Burnley but for those not as lucky I can only sympathise for the feelings of lost emptiness which must have followed.

Roll on the 4th December when the conquering heroes return to The Ship Inn, Preston.

SERVOSI and REVOLTER Friday 11th September @ The Ship Inn

'Fat Goth' @ The Ship - 04.09.09

Beautifully blending observational comedy with inspired lyrics makes 'Fat Goth' unlike anything you'll have heard before, covering some awesome hits such as 'Hitchin A Ride' and 'Learn To Fly' as well as writing some of their own fantastically funny songs.

Their cover of 'The Lancashire Hotpots - Emo' was fantastic, tho i have to say it did have one of the dodgiest Lancashire accent i think i've ever heard, but that somehow made it even funnier than the song is normally.

'Woodland Warfare', 'Monkey', 'Facebook' and 'Hot Love' are quite simply pure, make you smile til the top of your head falls off, comedy. It is clear that Martyn and Chris love every minute of their peformance and their enjoyment is incredibly infectious.

If you like your music taken seriously and technically brilliant 'Fat Goth' is quite possibly not for you, but you should maybe give it a go, you might be very pleasantly surprised.

Friday 21st August @ The Ship with EXIT STATE

Well, I'm not sure we could have asked for things to have gone better on the launch night!

Exit State were incredible to jump in at the last minute to offer us their blinding set of uncompromising rock/ metal and even tho there were some teething problems with the P.A and the set up, they did their job professionally and entertained a near full Ship Inn for well over an hour!

The sambucca was flowing and the support from the local alternative crowd was phenominal - thanks again guys!!

To top it off, Manager Gaz jumped on the decs for his usual Friday night rock/ metal set and played us our fave tracks through the night into the wee small hours.

A very special thank you goes out to the Management/ staff/ events team at the Ship including Gaz, Spenny, Alice and Carol and Al Hargreaves for the sound! The Thunderground team are hoping that this is the beginning of a great friendship and a really good start to the alternative scene come back in Preston!!!

Plus another thank you goes out to Paddy from We Have Your Monkey for documenting the night with some crackin pics available on Thuderground/ The Ship Inn facebook pages.
